The end of the year is fast coming – 6 weeks to go! We have so much to do.
Today was Grandparents’ Day…. What a great celebration! It is so lovely to have our elders visit the school, please thank them for taking the time to come. Pictures will be available on the website soon.
Kindergarten transition days and parent evenings are now complete which has been a great opportunity to warmly welcome new families to our community.
There are also many celebrations, presentations and parent information evenings coming in the next few weeks so please keep a regular eye out for what is happening at the school so you do not miss out on any of the end of year events. https://www.southcoogeepublicschool.com/calendar/
We are so proud of our new school website https://www.southcoogeepublicschool.com/ Thank you to Mrs Walsh-Gay and her energy to have this new website as a hub of information, celebration and pride for our school. As a reminder please ensure your ‘Permission to Publish’ notes are returned so that we can showcase your child’s talents.
Hurray – the ‘Grasslands’ are almost complete. THANK YOU! Your $90 Voluntary contribution goes into making these large projects possible for our students. The Grasslands cost over $70,000 and a mix of funding has come from the successful application from the P & C for the NSW Government’s 2016 Community Building Partnership of $30,000, the Department of Education Community Consultation funding $12,000, school funds and part of your Voluntary Contribution fund. There are so many projects that still need to be done here at the school, so if you have not yet supported the $90 Voluntary contribution fund, there is still time. We also appreciate your support for the school and P & C fundraising, together with the time and energy you give. Thank you so much – It truly makes a difference.
There are many student congratulations to give throughout the year – Congratulations to Mia in Kindergarten who is heading to State Public speaking to not only represent our school but all schools in our region! Similarly, the success of our debating team has taken them to State camp for three days in Week 6. Outstanding!
A reminder for getting ready for summer – hats on, sunscreen and plenty of water for this time of year please. Year 2 have already started getting ready by attending swim scheme – so much fun!

Class of the Week – 5/6P
What an incredible year it has been to date in 5/6P! The Year 5 students have settled well into their Senior School classes and the year 6 students have developed as leaders within the classroom and across the school.
We have begun learning about Australian History in the 19th century in the History KLA. The students are highly engaged in researching and evaluating the varying viewpoints of British colonisation for people, groups and the environment.
In Science and Technology lessons, students have been exploring the properties of light through a series of collaborative inquiry-based learning activities. As a part of this study, students have been involved in hands-on investigations involving reflection, absorption and refraction of light.
The students in 5/6P have also experimented with perspective to create visual artworks and had the privilege to work with professional artist Steven Evans to create some extraordinary wave paintings.
We are looking forward to an exciting 6 weeks finish to the 2017 school year. Some of the upcoming activities include NRL rugby league clinics, high school transition, 2018 leadership day, surf education at Maroubra Beach, sport and school presentation days, year 6 graduation and excursions to the Movies & Luna Park!
For some Defence families this means relocating to a new area, if you are posting out or moving school this year please make sure you contact the office/classroom teacher or just drop me an email to inform us of the students last day of school and where you will be moving to. This information is much appreciated and is vital for future planning.
Deployments and Absence
Please make sure you let me know if a member of your family is away for an extended period of time. Having this knowledge will go towards supporting the student at school throughout the absence period.
Please let me know if you think your child may benefit from some extra support from me, I am here to help.

SCPS Maroubra Fun Run Team
Our runners did exceptionally well in the Maroubra Fun Run, and I am proud of the enthusiasm they took to training sessions each week leading up to the run, and their team spirit on the day.
We are pleased to share that our team won second place in the primary school 4k race event.
Thank you to all of the parents and families who came on the day to help organise our runners and help set up and pack away. It is a much-loved community event that we take part in every year, and it would not be the same without you.
