We hope that you have enjoyed your time during the school break and are starting to get back into routines.
All of our teachers and learners, have started engaging in their programs for a great start to the year. Our newest learners are settling in really well and we wish all our new families a special South Coogee PS welcome. We hope you will continue to enjoy your time as members of the South Coogee community.
We look forward to seeing all of our families and friends at the school regularly for many school events. Make sure you keep up to date on the school website and P & C Facebook. Our first P & C meeting is on Tuesday 13th Feb and ALL welcome to the ‘Welcome to School BBQ & Film’, Friday 23rd March.
We have such an outstanding school community and hope that you can continue to ensure, that, as parents and carers you put a great value on school and education. Explain to your child that treating everyone with respect, being on time and in school every day, wearing the correct uniform and working hard in school is important to you. These are also important life skills. The importance you place on these values will be the values your child holds.
To support learners, families and teachers we will make certain we are persistent in strengthening our successful programs under the ‘Kids Matter’ umbrella; such as BounceBack, Circletime, the Friendship Tree, Playground games, as well as building resilient leaders, and whole school relationships, in order to continue a positive environment at our school.
As a school community, we have made significant gains in the past three years and our results and External Validation can attest to our successful impact on student learning. We are so proud of the knowledge, skills and dedication teachers and learners have made towards the improvement and success. This year we are continuing with 23 classes, as you will read below. We have a demountable in the school grounds for the official extra 23rd class who will be a home for 5/6A. We are also excited about the introduction of an official open learning space for Year 4.
There will be some building works commencing on the school grounds over the next few weeks. We will give you regular updates about what spaces in the school that will not be accessible and the alternative arrangements to support.
We are looking forward to another successful year – Thank you for your ongoing support.
Compulsory School Attendance
Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for them to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people at school. Please take the time to read the brochure attached at the end of this newsletter for important information regarding attendance at South Coogee Public School.
It is lovely to see so many of our learners returning to school, looking so smart in their school uniform with new black shoes. I must compliment our parents and children on the way uniform is worn at our school. To support our smart appearance, we also expect that our learners will attend school with suitable haircuts. At SCPS we are very fortunate to have a uniform that is both practical and looks great. When worn well, our uniform; defines our identity as a proud school; gives learners a sense of belonging and promotes a positive perception of our school within our community. We thank our parents for your support in ensuring your children follow our school dress code. Please ensure you write your child’s name on all pieces of uniform.
Home time Arrangements
All children must be collected on time at the end of the school day, by the designated parent/carer. Please ensure your youngest child is aware of home time arrangements, ie if they are to wait for an adult to collect them, or they are to go home alone or to go to the OOSH.
Please note: that it is difficult for the office to contact your child/ren throughout the day to deliver messages. Please ensure your children knows daily pickup & drop off routines and if changes occur during the day please contact the office as soon as possible, avoiding the beginning and end of school times. Appreciated.
Soon families will be given statements for school fees, textbooks and upcoming events.
The school office will be going CASHLESS. We are encouraging families to make all payments online.
There will be no cash and limited Eftpos facilities (Term 1 only) made available on the school site. There will be a computer at the front office to help families with payments. We understand change can be interesting and thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter. We understand finance is very difficult at this time of year. Please remember that if you are having financial difficulty, contact Helen in the school office to organise a payment plan.
P & C http://www.southcoogeepublicpandc.org.au/

As your children become more and more reliant on the Internet for both school work and entertainment, we must all, as a community, be more aware for the need to monitor the sites your child visits. In school, through classroom activities and discussion, we highlight positive uses of technology, but also ways in which we can all keep safe through responsible use of the internet, our mobile phones and social media (eg WhatsApp, Facebook etc…). At home you can ensure the security systems on your computers, tablets and mobiles are up to date and also, please talk to your child about the dangers of accessing unfamiliar sites, or giving parents’ e-mail/Facebook/Twitter etc…. details to strangers.

Native Aboriginal & Memorial gardens
During 2017 parents and staff have generated two wonderful gardens at the Moverly Rd entrance to the school.
Our native aboriginal garden was created with funding from the Government and will be an interesting learning space for learners as well as aesthetically pleasing when coming into our school. With special thanks to John.
Our memorial garden and mural represent the Australian Defence families within our community and funding has come from Coogee Diggers and the AFD. The school donation of poppies are a wonderful addition that makes the garden look vibrant. We ask that all people who visit our school are respectful and do not touch our gardens.
On behalf of the school community I would like to extend a warm welcome to the new Kindergarten families who have joined us at South Coogee PS. Kindergarten is an exciting time as children embark upon new adventures in the world of learning. During the year, your child will learn how to read, write words and sentences, count numbers, and so much more. We hope to make your child’s learning experience a fun and exciting one that will instil a love of learning that will last throughout your child’s years of education.
Our learners are in classes and have settled wonderfully. We have formed 23 classes for 2018 which is a very exciting time for all. As you would appreciate, the process of forming classes is a highly complex process that we take very seriously and handle carefully. As you would imagine, this is a complex web of variables that requires careful thought and discussion. I hope you understand that it is not always possible to meet all requests due to the constraints and complexities of this process. We have outstanding teachers here at the school and I am sure you are aware that a major school focus is on Teacher Performance & Development and the practice of Visible Learning. We will continue to encourage you to attend our Parent Information nights to communicate teaching and learning practices, school initiatives and curriculum throughout the course of the year. Please keep an eye out in the Newsletter for dates and times.

Welcome to Our New Staff
Very Important Information Below - Please Read
Demerit points: You only have 12 and it takes three years for lost points to be returned.
- No Parking in a school zone. We are supporting you with having teachers supervise movement in the KISS & GO from 3pm. Penalty is $173 and 2 demerit points.
- No Stopping area – Stopping is not permitted in these areas for any reason. This includes corners and spaces either side of a pedestrian crossing. Penalty is $311 and 2 demerit points.
- Double parking: Penalty is $311 and 2 demerit points
- Double parking blocks the road, blocks vision for people traveling behind and encourages children onto the road between cars that are often ready to move.
We have been advised that Parking officers will be outside the school on a regular basis to ensure cars are clear of the zone and to assess the success of the new parking changes.
Children and Cars
The vulnerability of children around cars cannot be overemphasised. Restricted visibility and blind spots can make reversing a vehicle an awkward manoeuvre at the best of times. Add to this the unpredictability of children, their small size and their lack of knowledge and understanding of traffic and you could have a recipe for tragedy. Please be patient. It is designed to assist improve safety for all.
Patience and understanding please
Please be patient with this process as some people are learning and becoming familiar with the KISS & GO system. Getting angry or cross with people who are trying to keep your children safe does not assist the process. If you have any questions or suggestions to improve things please raise them with us in an appropriate manner.
Please use the gates on Moverly Rd & Tucabia St – PLEASE DO NOT enter & exit through the OOSH centre! Reminder that bell times are now 9am PROMPT start and 3pm finish.
No Dogs are permitted on site or tied to the school fence – Please leave ‘Fido’ at home.
Update of details
The vital ‘Notes pack’ is on the way – it is very important to ensure you have given the school the most up to date details for the safety and care of your child. If your address, phone numbers, email addresses or emergency contacts have changed recently, please contact the office NOW to update your details.
If your child needs to bring a mobile phone to school, they will need to bring in a signed Mobile Phone Policy and leave their phone at the office each morning. The Mobile Phone Policy notes are available at the office.
For over a year now, James Anthony Catering has been a member of our school community. They are doing a great job ensuring our parents and learners have access to health food whilst at school.
The school canteen is open Monday to Friday. PLEASE NOTE: We are encouraging main recess and lunch orders are purchased online through MUNCH MONITORS.
We are very fortunate to have a highly competent and proactive P&C at South Coogee PS. Again this year the Stationery packs have provided our families with a cheaper and convenient option for purchasing their children’s stationery according to a list of school requirements. Thank you.
From all the staff at South Coogee Public School – Welcome! We look forward to your support and a fantastic year of learning.

Meet our 2018 School Captains
On Thursday, I had the pleasure of sitting down with our 2018 South Coogee Public School Captains, Niina O and Jonah C, to discuss their thoughts on the role, ideas for how the school could be improved and their personal passions.
What are you excited about this year at South Coogee PS?
Niina – I’m excited about hosting assemblies, working with my friends, and getting involved PSSA sport. I also am excited about helping the new students and staff at the school. I like to show them how things work at South Coogee.
Jonah – Just leading the kids and helping them to succeed with following the school values.
What do you love about South Coogee PS?
Niina- Most of the teachers put in a lot of effort for us and I like how we get to use technology in our classrooms. Like the year 5& 6 students get to bring their own iPads with the BYOD program.
Jonah – I love how there is a variety of options to learn about such as photography, cooking and drama. I also love the variety of technology we get to use at school. We can use computers, interactive whiteboards and iPads.
What would you like to improve about South Coogee PS?
Niina- I would like to improve some of the technology in the library because some of the computers are slower or don’t work. I would also like to a see even more books in the library because I love to read.
Jonah – I would like to improve the grass on the paddock because some of it is rocky and kids could trip over and get hurt.
What are you passionate about?
Niina- I love to play netball because it is a team sport so you get to play with friends. I play for Mascot at Heffron courts each week. I also love to dance. I have been dancing for four years and I love meeting people and making friends through dance.
Jonah – I love to going to Maroubra Beach to surf with my friends and I also love playing Oz Tag with my mates. I play for Maroubra Lions.
What is something that people might be surprised to find out about you?
Niina- This year is the only year that I will be at school be with my sister and brother. My brother is in Year 3 and my sister just started kindy.
I also have another weird story about myself. When I was little I was eating chickpeas and for some reason I stuck one up my nose. I tried to get it out by using a tissue but it was really stuck. My mum had to help me get it out and she said I was really lucky because I might have needed to go to the hospital to get it removed.
Jonah – One time I stayed up all night trying to find Santa. Unluckily I couldn’t find him so on Christmas morning I woke up very tired.
The swimming carnival was so much fun! The day ran very smoothly with thanks to Mrs Megan Pitarelli and Ms Betty Thomas.
There were many excited students at the swimming carnival. All children participated well and their behaviour was fabulous. I’d like to thank the many parents who were in attendance on the day for supporting our children and lending a helping hand. In addition, I’d like to thank our wonderful team of teachers who assisted for their outstanding organisation!
Thanks to those parents who have already paid your PSSA fees. These must be paid by 16th February.
All other sports will be invoiced next week.
