2018: Term 1, Week 4

Principal’s Message

It has been another exciting week at South Coogee PS. It was fantastic to see so many families at our Meet The Teacher Evening. We hope you gained a clear  understanding of the expectations within the classroom,  stage/grade opportunities and the general organisation of the school. Thanks to our wonderful P & C for running the cake stall on this evening.

Parent forum on Saturday 10th March, 2018 at 9 – 11am

As part of community consultation in building our new school plan for 2018-2020 together with engaging our strategic focus of Cohesive Community, we will be holding a parent forum on Saturday 10th March, 2018 at 9 – 11am.

Our focus question will be: “In the context of a rapidly changing world and the complex nature of workplaces in the future; what are the skills our children and community will need that will define our vision for South Coogee PS.

We are looking forward to the opportunity of having discussions with you to further build our strong partnerships and open communication in order to engage all school members in a safe, challenging and supportive learning environment together. We will briefly look at our celebrations of how exceptionally successful the school has been already from the last School Plan to our Next steps for 2018-2020.

Please make yourself available to attend as we would greatly appreciate your opinions, thoughts and ideas.

Opera Australia

This week we were fortunate to host the launch of Opera Australia’s NSW Schools Tour of “The Magic Flute”. The Honourable Don Harwin MLC, NSW Minister for the Arts, NSW Member for Coogee, Bruce Notley-Smith MP and Mr Tony Grybowski, CEO, Australia Council for the Arts were all in attendance.

Our learners were mesmerised throughout this colourful and entertaining performance and we would like to thank Opera Australia for organising this wonderful event at our school.

School invoices

Earlier this week you would have received your School invoice for Semester 1, 2018. This includes all major school contributions, excursions/incursions and sport for Terms 1 and 2.

Please be aware the school office will be going CASHLESS. We are encouraging families to make all payments online through the School Website  https://www.southcoogeepublicschool.com  or via SKoolbag. We have installed a computer in the office foyer for anyone that may require access to the website.

Please contact Helen in the school office to arrange a payment plan if you are experiencing financial difficulties or if you are having trouble accessing the payment system.

Please ensure you look at the invoice closely as Sports Fees are $70.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

How to engage your children in conversations about their learning

Over the past two years our teachers have developed a common language for learning at South Coogee Public School. Our aim is to help our learners to take ownership of their learning and have a clear understanding of their next learning steps. Our teachers are clear with learners about why they are learning what they are learning, they help them with establishing goals and identifying their strengths, as well as encouraging them to reflect on their learning and to seek feedback on their work.

To help families have an understanding of how you could use this language at home when supporting your children as they develop new skills, I have included a link to a wonderful article about Visible Learning written by Sasha Lynn and published at Kidspot.com.au that explains “how to keep the learning going at home”.

I have also included a list of 5 key questions parents can ask their children about their learning.
