2018: Term 4 Week 5

Principal’s News

Dear parents and caregivers,

Last week I attended the NSW Primary Principals’ Conference and was truly inspired by a number of guest speakers. Michael Crossland emceed the conference and truly brought the message about The Power of Perspective home to us. I invite you to watch his short clip and read his life story. https://youtu.be/iN4AuZJZXWk

There wasn’t a dry eye in the auditorium! The theme encompasses truly believing that the gift of giving can transform this world and I encourage our community to think about how we might be able to collectively make a difference by thinking big and beyond ourselves to make a difference to those less fortunate than us.

Proud of our Learners…..

We are so proud of Indy G who has recently been acknowledged for her outstanding talent in sport with the ‘Southern Courier 2018 Local Sports Stars Award’. We recognise Indy’s wonderful smile and positive attitude here at school and know how successfully she competes in our school activities, then it is a great tribute to be awarded the accolade for how well she participates in all the amazing sports during the weekend as well. Congratulations, well done Indy!

Year 5 Leadership Training Day

Next Tuesday, 20 November all students in year 5 will take part in a Leadership Training Day. The students will explore what it means to be leader and examine the positive qualities that leaders possess.  They will also be involved in team building activities and challenges.

On this day, we will also be discussing the school leadership opportunities for next year and the nomination process. Expressions of interest forms will be distributed for the following 2019 leadership positions: School Captains and Vice Captains, and House Captains and Vice Captains.

We are looking forward to working together with our Year 5 students to explore the meaning of leadership. It should be a wonderful day!

Grow Your Mind

We are very excited to announce that next year South Coogee Public School will be implementing the Grow Your Mind program. This positive education program supports our Kids Matter focus – supporting learners’ mental health and wellbeing. Each class will be provided with a Grow Your Mind kit. These kits are informed by leading-edge research in the fields of developmental cognitive neuroscience, mindfulness, social and emotional learning and positive psychology. The kits are designed to make embedding wellbeing messages easy, fast and effective.

Grow Your Mind kits aim to support South Coogee Public School to have a positive, inclusive culture by facilitating a common language of wellbeing.

In each kit there are resources that help to grow learners’ resilience, mindfulness, impulse control, emotional regulation, courage and a growth mindset.

If you would like to know more about this initiative you can visit the Grow Your Mind website at:  https://www.growyourmind.life/

We are very thankful to our P&C who have agreed to cover the cost of this initiative. In order to raise funds for the Grow Your Mind program, they have agreed to run a BBQ at Eastgardens Bunnings on Saturday 1st December. We are looking for volunteers to help out at this fundraising event. The roster for classes is listed below:

7:30 -10:00am Stage 2 (Years 3 & 4)

10:00am -12:30 pm Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2)

12:30 – 2:00pm Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten)

If you are able to help out please email:  scps.pandc@gmail.com

Class of the Week – 1DD

1DD is enjoying a very busy term. We are learning all sorts of wonderful and interesting facts about different Asian perspectives.

In Science we are finding out about mixtures in everyday life. These are fun lessons. But, best of all, we are learning how to write a procedure and we get to cook and EAT some of our procedures. We have made fairy bread, which was very yummy, and a cheese sandwich. Some children don’t like cheese, so they made a vegemite sandwich instead. This week we are making jelly cups – delicious! Next week it will be chocolate crackles. We also have pasta and fried rice to look forward to.

We have loved taking part in Jump Rope For Heart and we are now very fit. Mrs Michaels is taking us for dance on Wednesday mornings, which we all love doing, and it helps our fitness too.

As Year 1 comes to a close we are ready and looking forward to Year 2.

Cornflour Experiment

The mixture has cornflour and water.

I love the experiment.

If you mix it fast it dries.

If you mix it slow it is still liquid.

It felt like slime.

Take 3 for the Sea

On Monday, 12 November 2018, learners from all Stages spent some time after lunch “Taking 3 for the Sea”.  This involved learners each collecting three pieces of rubbish, from various areas of the school, to prevent them from entering our waterways. While learners are generally good at putting their rubbish in the bin, the outcome demonstrated that there is still a lot of rubbish getting away in the school grounds.  Stage 2 students collected a particularly impressive haul of rubbish as shown in the photo! Well done to all learners and keep it up, not just in the school, but when you are out and about.

Don’t forget to Snap and Share by taking a photo of your child/children in the act of ‘taking 3’ and emailing it through to scps.take3@gmail.com with their name and class in the subject line. And use the hashtag #scpstake3 if you share it to your Facebook or Instagram.

From the Office

CareMonkey

Thanks so much to those parents who have embraced our new way of delivering notes through CareMonkey. Once the students’ profiles were established, it has proven to be a quick and effective way of providing information and getting permission. Parents have told us how they love that they can respond quickly and efficiently, without the hassle of having notes go missing or being ruined in schoolbags. Also, the quicker you respond, the less follow-up emails you will get.

Front Office

We are sad to be saying farewell to the wonderful Colleen from the front office. She has taken a position as office manager at Chifley Public School until the end of 2019, and we wish her all the best in her new role. She has been a fabulous addition to the staff at SCPS, and she will be greatly missed by the staff, parents and students.

Fees

All outstanding invoices from 2017/2018 have recently been sent home, and all school fees are now due. For those on payment plans – could you please continue to make your nominated payment.

Jump Off Day

Thank you to ALL the students who got involved with Jump Rope for Heart!
