Welcome back to the school community and a very warm welcome to our new families who are joining us for the first time.
I sincerely hope you all had a restful break and are completely refreshed and ready for a wonderful and productive year of learning.
Our start to the year has been remarkably smooth and much collaborative planning and hard work has gone into making it an easy and positive transition. This year we have 23 classes (details below). Our teachers and learners are very excited about starting on their learning journey this year.
Last week we held our school swimming carnival. Despite the heat, the day ran smoothly thanks to the outstanding organisation by Mrs Pitarelli and Ms Thomas. Thank you to the many parents who attended this event by supporting our children and lending a helping hand. I’d also like to thank our magnificent team of teachers who helped to make the day a great success!
On Monday, it was wonderful to meet many of the new Kindergarten families at the Tea and Tissues morning tea. Thank you to our Year 1 parents who kindly donated many tasty treats and made our new families feel welcome at South Coogee PS. The first day of Kindergarten is an exciting and emotional day for both parents and children. We hope to make your child’s learning experience a fun and exciting one that will provoke their curiosity and promote a lifelong love of learning.
At South Coogee we have a vibrant and welcoming community. We look forward to seeing all of our families and friends at the school regularly for many school events. Make sure you keep up to date through:

Our first P & C meeting is on Wednesday 13th Feb and our ‘Welcome to School BBQ & Film Night ‘ is on Friday 1st March (please see flyer below).
In our efforts to continue to foster a positive school community we are very excited about the implementation of Grow Your Mind program. This positive education program supports our Kids Matter focus – supporting learners’ mental health and wellbeing. Each class will be provided with a Grow Your Mind kit. These kits are informed by leading-edge research in the fields of developmental cognitive neuroscience, mindfulness, social and emotional learning and positive psychology. The kits are designed to make embedding wellbeing messages easy, fast and effective. Our teachers will be involved in training in how to implement this program effectively in the classroom over Term 1 and the program will commence in Term 2.
If you would like to know more about this initiative you can visit the Grow Your Mind website at: https://www.growyourmind.life/
We are very thankful to our P&C who have agreed to cover the cost of this initiative.
At South Coogee we are on a path of continuous learning and improvement. As a school community, our Visible Learning journey has enabled us to make significant learning gains over the past four years. We are immensely proud of the knowledge, skills and dedication teachers and learners have made towards our success and look forward to continued improvement.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to 2019! Its so lovely to be here at South Coogee Public School. The students have settled well and have enjoyed being back with their friends and teachers.
I would like to take this time to introduce myself. My name is Kaylie Johnson and I am currently Relieving as Deputy Principal at South Coogee for the term. I have made my move here after a term working at the Department of Education Head Office and prior to that I worked at both Vaucluse and Annandale Public School. I hail originally from the Central Coast but have made my home here in Sydney.
I have loved walking around the school grounds getting to know the students and families. So if you see me please come and say hello. Its likely I may also be lost! I will also be a regular at Kiss and Go. If you need anything please don’t hesitate to contact me either in person or on the school phone.
I look forward to a great Term 1 and seeing many new smiling faces. Keep a look out in my newsletter items as for the next few weeks I’ll be posting some interviews with our Year 6 Leaders.

We look forward to seeing you there!
Please Note: Time does not allow teachers to discuss individual learners on this night. If you do have any concerns that need to be addressed immediately, please call our school office to make an appointment to meet your child’s class teacher or Stage Supervisor.
New Outdoor Learning/Play Area
During the school holidays, construction was completed on a new outdoor learning/play area at the front of the school. We think this area looks wonderful and will give our learners a space where they can be active, and can engage in sensory, creative and imaginative play.
The learners will be visiting this new area with their classes over the next two weeks to discuss how to use the space safely. In Week 4 the area will be opened for use at recess and lunch.
Please note: The bike racks which were removed from this area will be reinstalled near the front area in the coming weeks.
YLead Stage 3 Incursion
Today our Stage 3 students explored what it takes to be a respectful, courageous and positive leader in the community. The team at YLEAD lead a full day experience educating our students and empowering them to be the best they can be. We explored the acronym HEART in a series of fun and zany activities that summarise:
Helpful – looking out for everyday actions that enrich the lives of others
Energetic – promoting and sharing positive energy
Active and Aware – becoming more away of personal strengths and how they can be used to take positive action as a leader
Resilient – the importance of having the courage to try new things, and learning to respond positively to challenging or difficult situations
Team player – the importance of working with others in an encouraging and supportive environment
Home Time Arrangements
All children must be collected on time at the end of the school day, by the designated parent/carer. Please ensure your youngest child is aware of home time arrangements, ie if they are to wait for an adult to collect them, or they are to go home alone or to go to the OOSH.
Please note: that it is difficult for the office to contact your child/ren throughout the day to deliver messages. Please ensure your child knows daily pickup & drop off routines and if changes occur during the day please contact the office as soon as possible, avoiding the beginning and end of school times. Your cooperation is appreciated.
