2020: Term 4 Week 10

Principal’s Message

A huge box of THANKS……

Dear Parents and Carers

We have been receiving your very kind thanks and appreciation for the enormous work our staff have accomplished this year. Thank you!

Many of our Year 6 families have shared their gratitude for the education, care and support our teachers have given to their children in building character and learning over the past 7 years. Thank you!

So many positive responses to our online Zoom assemblies and presentations. Teachers have been working hard to adapt and show flexibility to ensure you can all see inside the classroom. Thank you!

Thank you! To our wonderful P & C, for the dedication and ongoing support throughout the year to enable all of the children have the resources they need to excel and the connection to community to thrive. An extra huge THANK YOU from us all, for the fabulous teacher appreciation boxes given to all staff. We are so very grateful for the generosity and recognition.

Thank you! To our staff. What an outstanding group of individuals you are. The strength of commitment found in our teachers who continually strive to do their very best to ensure our children learn. It is seen in the long hours our teachers put into our school often at the expense of their own families. It is seen in what they do above and beyond the call of duty. It is seen in the professional way in which they meet many challenges and care unconditionally for every learner in our school without exception and any expectation of reward or thanks.

Farewell to our magnificent, outstanding teaching staff who will be heading to other roles and taking with them a piece of South Coogee magic next year:

  • Luke Muir (5/6M) who is heading to Queensland next year. Thank you for all your dedication to our school and the passionate support for our senior learners,
  • Aimee De Villecourt (5/6D) who is also chasing the sun. She is moving to the beautiful Sunshine Coast during the year so we might see her for a day or two before she packs her bags. We have appreciated your commitment,
  • Alon Horry (5/6H) who will be spreading his teaching skills around the Eastern Suburbs. Thank you for your enthusiasm and care,
  • Lexi Jenna (3J) we wish you all the very best with your growing family and look forward to seeing baby pictures in the new year,
  • Leigh and Ngaire, our wonderful School Learning & Support Officers, we wish you a wonderful new year and positivity in your new future, and to
  • Kim O’Rourke our amazing School Admin Officer who will be staying closer to home with her new role in a few local schools.

It is with a saddened heart that we farewell these wonderful people who have made a real difference to our school and your children. Thank you so much for the energy and support you have given us here. We will miss you but wish you all the very best.

Thank you! To our children, our learners, who come every day and try their very best. They are not afraid to make mistakes, support their friends and their teachers, and are always willing to have a go and try new things. Our learners are always filled with encouragement of their friends and a generosity of spirit. Our teachers and I are so very, very proud of every single child. We enjoy watching them learn and grow into responsible, loving, compassionate and caring human beings.

Thank you! For the flexibility and support during an unprecedent world event. Reflecting and acknowledging how very fortunate we are to live in Sydney. Having been able to send our children to school every day, with only a short interruption. We have continued the teaching and learning this year in comparison to other parts of Australia and the world. A humbling understanding of appreciation and why, at South Coogee PS, the children are at the centre of what we do every day.

We wish you and your family joy and happiness. Enjoy this special time with your loved ones. We look forward to seeing you all back at the school on Friday 29 January 2021.

Sincerely

Trish Fisher

Deputy Principal’s Message

It has certainly been a year where we have all learnt to be flexible, patient, kind and grateful in the midst of a global pandemic. While things have looked a little different at SCPS this year, we are so lucky that our children have been able to attend school for the majority of the year with only a small interruption. We only have to look across the state and international borders to see what could have been. Thank you to everyone in our community who has supported the staff and students through this journey. It will be a year that we never forget as we look forward to all the great things to come in 2021. I wish everyone a wonderful holiday and a Happy New Year!

2021 Year 6 Leadership Team

On Tuesday morning, I had the pleasure of announcing the 2021 Year 6 Leadership Team via a Zoom assembly. While it wasn’t the usual way we announce the leaders, it was lovely to be able to have family and friends across the city, country and world join in the special occasion.

I am so incredibly proud of all the Year 5 students who nominated themselves and presented speeches a couple of weeks ago. Regardless of whether they received a formal position or not, they will all make incredible leaders for our school in 2021. I have no doubt they will work hard together to make our school an even better place by upholding the school values throughout the year.

Thank You Parents

A HUGE THANK YOU to our parent community from all of the staff at South Coogee PS.

We have received the loveliest gift from the P & C as a thank you for the work this year. We are so very grateful!

The card reads “We’ve never seen your cape or mask, but we see your superpowers every day! Thanks for being a super teacher! Here is a great big THANKS for a great school year! From the SCPS P&C and all your adoring students.”

Our class captains had the honour of presenting the gift to their teachers. Some pictures…..

Gardening News

The End of a Great Year of Gardening

In the gardening club, we’ve been clearing off the vegetable garden to let it rest over the holidays with a compost boost and a thick layer of mulch.

In the Sustainable Garden classroom, Years 1 and 3 have examined how to attract pollinators and good critters to the garden by building insect/bee hotels and planting insect and bird-attracting plants. Students in 3J have planted some lovely natives this week to attract pollinators to our gardening space. These include bottlebrush, grevillea, coastal geranium and coastal rosemary.

I would love to commend our Year 6 students, Gia I and Queen C who have designed and created their sensory garden. It has been transformed from a dirt patch to a colourful productive garden bed that includes strawberries, a variety of succulents and flowers as well as a statue they built from recycled and repurposed materials.

It has been a pleasure teaching all the students this year. I’d like to wish Year 6 all the best as they move on to high school and beyond.

The canteen will be taking it’s last orders for 2020 on Wednesday 16 December, 2020 and re-opening on Friday 29th January, 2021.

We are happy to announce that we will be offering our full menu in 2021, and will be available Monday through to Friday.

Please note, the cut off time for online orders will be 8.30am in the New Year, this is to assist our staff to ensure orders are prepared on time for your children.

Stay safe.
