English as an Additional Language/Dialect – SOUTH COOGEE PUBLIC SCHOOL

English as an Additional Language/Dialect

The school serves a diverse multicultural community. In 2016, 34% of students at SCPS have a Language Background Other Than English (LBOTE) and many receive help to develop their English language skills. Specialist teachers provide targeted support programs for these students from Kindergarten to Year 6.

The needs of EALD learners are met via a range of teaching programs. Newly arrived (NAP) students at the early stages of language acquisition are supported in small group intensive English classes with a focus on oral language, vocabulary building and basic grammar. EALD students with more developed skills attend withdrawal classes that complement the mainstream program and aim to improve students’ understanding of the grammar of academic writing and reading.
